  1. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
This is my favorite of the list. Like always, the truth doesn’t need much words. This quote is so clear and precise – I love it. How many times are you questioned when you want to try out something new, with people (peers/family members) trying to talk you out of it, because they themselves are afraid to face challenges.

  2. Do, or do not. There is no “try”—Jedi Master Yoda

Growing up I have always been underestimated by many people including my family. In middle school, my grades were horrible and my mom had became really disappointed since my sister always brought good grades. I knew my mom could not feel any worse towards me so I stopped “trying.”

Therefore, I did not graduate from middle school and was sent to a continuation school. Once I was in continuation school, nobody believed I was going to graduate High School so I promised myself I was going to prove everybody wrong. I relate to this quote because I did not stop “trying”; I just stopped doing my work. Now I do not say “I tried to graduate High School”. I say “I did graduate High School.”

  3. “When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.” In one of my lessons, I have come to realize that each experience is the personal start towards the enhancement of understanding me. It opened my eyes to see that each lesson has its own teaching towards an inner growth. One of my elders in my community stated, “you must let go of that which holds you back in order to grow.” Life is like a seed: we can never predict the color of the flower, but we can enjoy the beauty it brings.

  4. You become what you think about. For example, I’m thinking about becoming a police officer. But people keep discouraging my intention. It makes me upset when I think about of what they have said: like I might get killed and “not live the rest of my life.” The more I keep thinking about what I want to become, the more determined i am to keep on track. I have disciplined myself not to lose focus on what I want to become.

  5. If you are going through Hell, keep going. I’m a firm believer that happiness doesn’t exist, only happy moments. Therefore I see life as a challenge every day. I came from a poor family. My parents weren’t always able to give us the luxury other children had. At a very young age I knew the situation we were in. I started working by age fourteen to provide for myself, and make things easier for my family. By never giving up, and having the courage to overcome hell, I have found success.

  6. When life kicks you, let it kick you forward. When trying to find a job it is a hard task. There have been many road blocks in my life that could have stopped me from trying to find a job. Filling out applications and not hearing a response from the employer can be very stressful, but that is when I make a move to call and see the status of my application. I have the strength to move along in life there is no possible way I can move backwards. So when I fall into a hole that I think I can’t get out of, I figure a way to get up and out to seek my goal.

  7. The great Albert Einstein once said “Imagination Is more important than knowledge,” which led me to believe that creativity is powerful. Having a brain full of knowledge is a great thing, but in order create you need to have a sense of imagination. Inventors have an imagination that surpasses everyone which allows them to think outside the box and put their knowledge and ideas to create new things. Imagination makes the impossible possible and allows us to break barriers of what we can’t and can do. Knowledge was not the only factor that made Einstein an important person in our history; he also had big ideas to put his wisdom to work. Yet there are plenty of people who keep on observing knowledge each day, but without an imagination their knowledge is not useful to society.

  8. Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. –Henry Ford
I promised myself I wouldn’t let distractions cause me anxiety or deter me from my dreams. My distractions come in many forms and can be as subtle as listening to the last fifty seconds of a song I like, or catching the last twenty minutes of a prime time television show that I don’t really care to watch, yet I sit there for twenty minutes watching it. There are times when I feel as if I have neglected my stated duties to the point of utter failure. I tell myself you did not do as you told yourself. You promised yourself you would be disciplined, regimented and you’ve failed yourself. Those are the frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal as Henry Ford said. That which is frightful is the failure I see and it lurks in the back of my mind.

  9. You are who you believe you are. The man, brother and the father who takes his son to school every morning proudly. The little girl who believes that anything is possible and one day will be the president of the United States. Or the full time student in class doing assignments, homework and relearning the process of thinking again. The boss of two thousand employees when three years before he never had a job. All I’m saying is you can become whoever you want to be through hard work and faith. I didn’t think that I would be sitting in class week after week but I am. I here because I believe I should be here.

  10. If you are going through hell, keep going. I remember a time in my life when it seemed like everything I did was never enough. I felt like I was as low as low can get and walking away was the only option I had. I was raised to follow things that I began all the way through, yet I just knew that there was no way I can get anything positive out of my situation. Then I looked at my grandmother, who has been through a lot in her life. She has had to endure things that most people can’t even imagine, but she is still around bringing joy into the lives of the people around her. That’s when it dawned on me hardship is only temporary, and I can do anything I put my mind and heart into. Not soon after I made up my mind and I decided that I was going to do what was best for me. It was the best decision of my life.

  11. “Attitude is not the result of success; success is the result of attitude.” I was once in a situation where I was emptying an old file cabinet of unwanted files and came across a particular folder of successful quotes. I began to read some of these. Some of the contents of this folder were sayings, quotes, prayers, and humorous expulsions. One particularly, had resonance and it said “Life is 97% attitude” This really moved me and I agreed.

  12. When life starts to throw obstacles in your way, don’t let life bring you down, jump over it. Throughout life we might go through different things. Some might be easy and some might be hard. By showing that even when you are down you can prevail and keep a positive mind you can always move forward in life. Overcoming the struggles in life can help better you for more hard times that might come along. If you jump over one obstacle, you can jump over another.

  13. Great list, Shari. I needed it this morning! One of my personal favorites: “We are confronted with insurmountable opportunities.” – Cartoonist Walt Kelly
